I was at a massage course not long ago, and as usual, the class was split along two divides - the Scientists and the Spiritualists. I always find this an extremely tricky conundrum, because I am evenly split between the two camps.
As a scientist, I would once have been dubious and sceptical about the spiritualists as well. However, it’s not until you have your own spiritual awakening (or unique set of circumstances that opens you up to the spirit world) that you really begin to understand. One thing I do notice about the scientists is that many of them are very quick to judge and shut down the spiritual people.
I found it incredibly difficult to swallow my distress at times, as the instructor was firmly in the science camp and made no bones about it. She particularly referenced the terms “holistic intuitive”, which is what I use in my massage description, and openly stated:
“I dislike those who claim to give an intuitive massage. I find these people are simply doing whatever they feel like”
I find this simply untrue. I know very well that when I am in tune with my client (and whilst admittedly, it doesn’t occur every single time with every single massage) I intuitively know where to spend more time. One of the reasons I went to a biofield tuning course, was much like Eileen McKusick (the founder of this method), I too have a “mail slot” in the back of my head. Where information from God, Spirit or whatever you wish to call it, is dropped in. One thing that was undeniable, was that I had not told anyone on the course before we started where I sat with the spiritual stuff, yet when I laid hands on the spiritual people, they could immediately sense that I am a spirit worker.
It’s odd, because often these courses can be the other way around. Loaded with spiritual people and not enough background in science, which can be equally frustrating. So maybe it is time to really explain what I mean by a holistic, intuitive massage.
Holistic refers to the whole body – and not just the physical body.
This is what I love about the Lomi Lomi massage and the Hawaiian philosophy. We are all interconnected. We are sharing the same experiences, the same problems, the same joys. We are one. In a holistic massage, I am treating the whole body, mind and state of interconnectedness. We are together in the massage/reiki session.
My mind is focused on healing intent. As you relax, I relax and our brain waves will start to synch. And I don’t like to do just back massages. The body does not work in isolation – when you hold tension anywhere in the body, it radiates everywhere; up to the head, out to the shoulders, along the arms, down the back, through the glutes, down the legs and into the feet. The tension may feel like it’s in your back, but it affects the whole body.
Intuitive refers to connection to Spirit.
Sometimes I get very strong directives from God/Spirit, other times not so much. Most of the time, I might just get a strong feeling to use a certain type of crystal or essential oil. I might feel the need to apply a weighted tuning fork on a certain pressure point, or finish off with a reiki wand. It depends on the client, and sometimes it depends on what I think/feel they want from me.
In a farmers back massage, I do not even attempt to call Spirit unless specifically requested. Please don’t misunderstand, I am not psychic, nor do I claim to be psychic. You still need to communicate if you want more/less pressure. I cannot possibly know you are busting to go to the bathroom, are too hot or too cold unless you tell me.
Communication is key - this is your time, whether scientific or spiritual, to relax and enjoy.
